Continuing trends from last year, 2021’s most notable movies so far are primarily coming out on streaming. Among them was a strange footnote in the filmographies of two of the most successful filmmakers in history.
Joe and Anthony Russo, fresh off of directing four movies for Marvel Studios, are back with their first non-studio film. Cherry is an adaptation of a book of the same name for Apple TV+.
It’s a strange story for the directors. It’s a small scale drama about war trauma and drug addiction but it’s blown up in scale and given the heavy casting and flowing cinematography of a blockbuster?
Is it appropriate? Probably not.
