Boba Fett Spin-Off “Book of Boba Fett” Announced for Disney+ in the Mandalorian Series Finale

In the post-credits scene for The Mandalorian Season 2, a surprise stinger for the rumored Boba Fett series appeared with a tentative premiere date of December 2021!

As we talked about last week, Disney’s extensive slate of Disney+ announcements announced the plan to release dozens of Star Wars, Marvel and Disney shows over the next several of years. The rumored Boba Fett series was missing from the announcements though despite repeated rumors for the series.

The stinger for the show though seems to have confirmed that they didn’t want to potentially spoil their surprise announcement.

The scene in question is brief but gives us a lot of implicit information. Bib Fortuna, Jabba’s former assistant, has apparently become an obese crime lord in his masters place at Jabba’s Palace. Boba Fett barges in and murders all of his loyal followers before taking his place on Jabba’s thrown, implicitly as revenge after being left for dead.

Book of Boba Fett seems to be a mini-series about the bounty Hunter moving up in the world and establishing his own criminal empire in the void of chaos created by the destruction of the Empire and the Hutt Clan.

Disney+‘s strategy for Star Wars shows seems to be to copy the CW style of storytelling wherein the main series (Arrow) gets used as a means to launch a slate of new shows (Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, etc.). That would explain why so many episodes this season served as pilots for potential stories.

The release date is a bit surprising. This being released in December of next year means that Book of Boba Fett may possibly be premiering side by side the same month as The Mandalorian Season 3, Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka. It’s likely though that the latter two series will be delayed into 2022 though to keep too many shows from screening at once.
