Chris Pratt trended on twitter on Monday as thousands of progressive activists criticized the star one again. The star of Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War and Jurassic World is no stranger to controversy. He’s had numerous run ins and minor controversies on twitter relating to his religion and supposed politics. He’s done little more than siring the pot of already brewing controversies.
That said, none of the actual controversies he’s been accused of have stuck to him. In 2019, he was accused of attending a “homophobic” church. Ellen Page famously lead a campaign against Pratt, Justin Bieber and Hillsong Church for it’s supposed homophobia. The only evidence supporting the claim followed the global pastor of Hillsong publicly repeating the Biblical mantre that the church doesn’t allow for homosexuality but emphasized that his church was welcoming to gay christians.
“As IndieWire reports, Hillsong global pastor Brian Houston issued a statement via the church’s website in 2015 that he “[holds] to traditional Christian thought on gay lifestyles and gay marriage. I do believe God’s word is clear that marriage is between a man and a woman. The writings of the apostle Paul in scripture on the subject of homosexuality are also clear, as I have mentioned in previous public statements.” – The Cut
Chris Pratt has never endorsed discrimination against gay Americans and publicly apologized after the controversy.
“It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which ‘hates a certain group of people’ and is ‘infamously anti-LGBTQ.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone.”
None of this has stopped mobs from demanding his “Cancelation” for a recent small “Controversy”.
The controversy this time around wasn’t caused by something Pratt had don’t specifically but something he didn’t do. As Newsweek writes, Pratt was accused of “supporting Trump” because he was one of the only Marvel stars who didn’t show up for a Joe Biden rally run by the Russo Brothers.
“Some of Pratt’s fellow Marvel colleagues—Don Cheadle, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana—are due to join the Democratic candidate and vice-presidential hopeful Kamala Harris for a virtual event on October 20 to raise money for the Biden campaign. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the fundraiser event, called “Voters Assemble,” gathers the cast of the Avengers as they “unite for democracy.” Pratt’s name is missing from the line-up, as are several other Marvel stars.”
The “scandal” caused thousands of Twitter fans to assume that Pratt was implicitly a supporter of President Trump and began berating him online. The initial claim was totally unfounded though. Pratt hadn’t publicly endorsed either candidate but the lie got around the world before the truth had time to put it’s pants on.
Pratt doesn’t speak very openly about his politics but he did donate to Obama in 2012 and may have donated to the Gabbert campaign last year.
The situation just goes to show how deeply the mere possibility of liking Trump can be to one’s public image.
